The municipality of Elmas acquired autonomy in 1989, until then it was considered a fraction of Cagliari.
However, it is well known as the Mario Mameli airport is located in its territory, the airport that handles the most passengers between the three main entrances of Sardinia together with Olbia and Alghero.
