Explore Monserrato: A Hidden Gem in Sardinia

Discover the enchanting Italian town of Monserrato (known as Paùli in Sardinian), nestled in the pristine nature of the metropolitan city of Cagliari in Sardegna.

Situated in the picturesque Campidano plain, Monserrato is surrounded by the charming Molentargius lagoon and captivating salt flats, creating a unique urban landscape near the capital.

Rich in history and tradition, Monserrato is an integral part of the metropolitan city of Cagliari, alongside Pirri, Selargius, Quartucciu, and Quartu Sant’Elena.

The Sardinian term Paùli or Paulli translates to marshland, highlighting the natural resources found in this area once known as Paùly and later as Paùli Pirri during the Middle Ages.

The historical events of Monserrato are closely intertwined with those of nearby Pirri. In 1690, it was incorporated into the county of S. Lorenzo under the Santjust family’s control until 1839.

  • At the heart of the historic center stands the imposing Church of S. Ambrogio, located along Via Zuddas. Dating back to the 15th-16th century, this church still retains traces of its original Gothic-Catalan architecture with a striking portal and rose window on its facade.
