San Gavino Monreale is a center with a distinctly rural aspect as evidenced by the numerous adobe houses.
Thanks to its central position in the middle of the Campidano, it was chosen in the 19th century by the Montevecchio mining company as the site of a large lead foundry, once the largest in Italy.
The original nucleus, which according to tradition was founded by a group of refugees from nearby towns, was built around the fourteenth-century church of San Gavino which, currently decentralized, is located on the southern edge of the town.
The church retains the Gothic apse and, on the southern side, a small portal and a single lancet window
acute arch.
Four have been found in the corbels of the apse
high reliefs carved in limestone, identified as portraits (from d.) of Eleonora d’Arborea, Brancaleone Doria, Ugone III and Mariano IV (the last three respectively husband, brother and father of the judge).
The territory has been frequented by man since the pre-Nuragic and Nuragic periods.
The Roman domination is testified by a necropolis, the peristyle of a rustic villa and other finds.
