The archipelago of La Maddalena (total area 49.3 km2) is located a short distance from the north-eastern coast of Sardinia and includes, without counting the numerous rocks and islets, seven main islands, united in two groups: in SE Maddalena, Caprera and S. Stefano; to NW Spargi, Budelli, Razzoli and S. Maria; between the last four and the group of Lavezzi islands (Corsica) open the Strait of Bonifacio, crossed by the limit of the Italian-French territorial waters.
The archipelago is of a granite nature like the territory of Gallura, whose coast also has similar landscape and vegetational aspects
Thanks also to this exceptional natural scenery, the islands of the archipelago together constitute one of the most interesting geographical and tourist areas in the Mediterranean. THE
The inhabitants, settled almost exclusively on the island of Maddalena, are employed for the most part in public employment, trade, fishing and seafaring activities.
High quality accommodation facilities are available on the Maddalena island, in S. Stefano and Caprera, where there is also a sailing center.
The islands of the archipelago, inhabited in prehistoric times, and certainly - as shown by the Neolithic findings of the rock shelter on the island of S. Stefano - from the fourth millennium BC, were known in Roman times with the name of "Cuniculariae" (of rabbits) and, since then, considered a strategic point of support for the routes of the Tyrrhenian Sea.
