Marrubiu (OR)

Marrubiu Piccolo agricultural and wine center, if located in one of the fertile areas of Sardinia in the Campidano di Oristano, the territory includes a part of the fine Monte Arci along its southern slope.

Before the great reclamation work that led to the birth of the Arborea Divisa in the nearby municipality of Terralba, the largest lagoon in the Oristano region, the Sassu, today totally dried up.

The history of Marrubiu is necessarily linked to one of the most important treasures of its territory, the obsidian of Monte Arci. This volcanic rock, of which some important outcrops can still be observed, was exploited without the Neolithic by the manufacture of weapons and tools and traded by Sardinian prehistoric people in a large part of the Mediterranean basin.

The birth of the village starts from the village of Zuradili in the eleventh century, and whose inhabitants if transferred to Marrubiu at the end of the fourteenth century.

Legend has it that they had forgotten a statue of the Madonna in the village. Therefore even today, at the beginning of May, a procession of traditional knights and chariots is celebrated that simulates the historical fact.

In Marrubiu there is one of the most important carnival events in the region. If it calls "Su Marrulleri" and every year it hosts numerous allegorical floats and masked groups not only from the town, but from many other centers on the island, who gather in Marrubiu on the first Sunday of Lent to parade together creating a very suggestive atmosphere. . The show is made up of colorful masks on foot, while the allegorical floats propose topical issues, enlivened and emphasized by the great artistic sensitivity of the parrot authors.
