Porto Torre s, Posthudòrra in Turritano, Portu Tùrre in Sardo, is a city in the province of Sassari
It is located on the north-western coast of Sardinia, in the Gulf of Asinara
The port of Porto Torres is one of the main centers of access to the island , with passenger routes for various Italian, Spanish and French cities
It covers an area of about 10,000 hectares, half of which include the Isola Piana and the Isola Asinara , site of the homonymous national park
Most of the territory is flat, being part of the Nurra, one of the main plains of Sardinia
The territory is crossed by two rivers, the Riu Mannu, which flows into the areas of the Roman bridge and the Santo river, which delimits the boundaries of the municipality to the west
In the area of Fiume Santo , various remains of crocodile animals, dwarf giraffes, etc. have been founddating back to the Miocene
The human presence, on the other hand, certainly remains at least as early as the pre-Nuragic period as can be deduced from the various necropolises in the area
It then continued to be inhabited in the Nuragic period , with at least 7 nuraghi still well preserved in the territory in addition to various domus de janas
Few traces remain instead of the Phoenician and Punic period , when surely the area of Porto Torres for its protected inlet was a safe landing place for sailors
The foundation of the city, initially called Turris Libissonis , occurs in Roman times and around the I century BCc
The maritime-mercantile activity of the colony is strongly documented by the cult of Isis (protector of sailors) witnessed by various monuments
Of this era is the Roman Bridge , the first and largest in Sardinia
To visit in Porto Torres, the Necropolis of Su Crucifissu Mannu dated around 3200-2800 aC, with 22 tombs carved into the rock and well preserved
Furthermore, as mentioned, there are at least 7 well-preserved nuraghi, including the Nuraghe Biunisi, the Nuraghe Monte Elva, and Il Nuraghe Margone
Also interesting is the Roman bridge which is still well preserved
Obviously, apart from archeology, the splendid beaches are worth a visit , of which that of Balai is undoubtedly the best jewel
