Costruito per volere dei Giudici di Cagliari tra XIII e XIV secolo quando  probabilmente quando il giudicato di Cagliari era sotto l’influenza di Pisa, fu completamente ristrutturato nella forma attuale (quadrangolare, con quattro torri angolari merlate) nel corso del ’300.
