Tortolì, ancient capital of the Gallura curatoria of Ogliastra and headquarters
bishop until 1927 (the year in which it was transferred to Lanusei), today it is one of the most important centers in the Ogliastra region.
Around the village, inhabited by eleven thousand residents and teeming with tourists in the summer, you will find wonderful beaches in the midst of woods and Mediterranean scrub, fertile plains and ponds, gentle cultivated hills and a particularity, a strip of red porphyry that runs parallel to the coast.
One of a kind is the piazzale degli Scogli Rossi in Arbatax: the large red porphyry cliffs draw a scene of great beauty for this site within the town of Arbatax, at the entrance to the port and at the foot of the Bellavista hill. The shore here is made up partly of granite and red porphyry pebbles and the rest of majestic cliffs that have always been frequented by the boys of the village for the trial in diving.
The Nuragic age has left more than 200 monuments in the territory, the site of s'Ortali 'e su Monti is a complete representation of it: its seven hectares include a complex nuraghe, a Giants' tomb, two menhirs, huts, a domu de Janas, a wall and remains of another nuraghe.
